Born on October 11th, 1921, Heinz Maurer graduated in 1940 in Boppard/Germany. The soon to be medical student was drafted in 1941 and experienced the war at the Russian front. For him the war ended as Russian prisoner from which he managed to escape in 1946. After his return the 25-year-old decided to continue his medical studies. Marked by his war experiences he saw an opportunity of helping others and relieving pain by becoming a doctor. In 1950 Heinz Maurer took the final exam and graduated at the University of Bonn.
